I have recently attended The Joffrey Experience in August and it was the most incredible experience of my life. Not only was I able to learn an extraordinary amount of dance and become a stronger dancer but I was also able to make new friends that I will cherish forever. Learning from different choreographers was extremely incredible because it helped be become stronger in certain areas that I had troubles in before. Overall, the experience I had at Joffrey was undescribable and I would be honored to experience it again in a different way.

The title best describing my 2014 JBS Florence summer intensive would be “Midsummer dream” because it truly was dream come true dance experience, by far the best one I ever had.   For two weeks I got to practice my skills at the studio of the renowned Scuola di Danza Hamlyn – a renaissance palace once owned by the duke of Florence in the heart of the beautiful city just steps from the river Arno.  The experience was incredible not only because of the location, but most of all because of the fantastic faculty. I was thought ballet classes by the one and only Davis Robertson, the Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet School Performance Company, who’s highly regarded expertise left an impact on my dance education forever. The program also offered unparalleled quality classes in Pointe, Contemporary, Repertory and Dance History.    Someone once said that “Plié is the first thing you learn and the last thing you master”. I would love to continue practicing my plié next summer at JBS which offers many other excellent programs and I would recommend Florence summer intensive to all seeking the crème de la crème experiences in their dance lives.

Before attending the summer intensive I thought I was only getting dance instruction.  I ended up with so much more.  The weeks felt like days and by the end I wished it wasn't over.  Immediately after, I was already looking forward to returning.  Here's why I am so grateful for experiencing the Joffrey Ballet.  Like everyone at Joffrey, dancing means the world to me.  Having reached the age and level of determination where it is no longer recreational, I was ready to advance.  I'm thankful for my home studio but wish to achieve more in order to find myself as a dancer and person.  When exploring companies, Joffrey was a dream.  After my audition I anxiously awaited the results.  I'll never forget the astonishing feeling of being chosen for this extraordinary and original intensive.  My high hopes were exceeded not only in dance but in ways I could never have imagined.  The instructors were phenomenal in shaping me as a student/person.  I still think of them every day.  What I learned in a mere three weeks was a treasure that can never be taken away.  This experience solidified my dreams and provided positive determination.  I cannot thank you enough.

Joffrey’s J&C program had a profound impact on me, as an artist and as a person. The intensive instilled in me a sense of confidence and determination that enabled me to break down boundaries and accomplish things I never believed possible, which was incredibly rewarding. I was continually challenged, and therefore improved immensely. I believe I returned from Joffrey a completely new dancer.  I had the honour of working with world renowned choreographers who shared their expertise and encouraged me to explore my creativity in a supportive environment. They’re so caring, and went above and beyond; giving each student individual attention. The teachers had unique styles, which richened my learning and elevated my technique and artistry. Their quality of training and the balance between tradition and innovation is unmatched by other institutions. Students explore a diverse range of styles which creates well rounded dancers who are ready for a professional career. I’m thankful to have been a part of the Joffrey legacy and will carry everything I learnt with me for the rest of my life. Attending JBS was a dream; it inspired me and elevated my passion for dance. I would be lucky and honoured to attend again.

Phoebe Klingman

My name is Phoebe Klingman. I am thirteen years old, and I love to dance. Dance isn’t just a sport; it’s an art form. Dance brings me joy. It’s not only a hobby; it’s what I want to do for my career, for the rest of my life. I feel like attending The Joffrey Ballet would make me a better dancer. I have heard great things about Joffrey, and I think you produce amazing dancers! It would make a huge difference in my life to go to such an incredible intensive with the best teachers! I would love to stay in New York or California for two weeks and dance non stop! One quality I admire about the Joffrey is that a Joffrey student is not only trained in ballet but also jazz, contemporary, modern, hip hop, character, and more! I appreciate this because I am a versatile dancer and I adore every style of dance. It would be my dream to attend your school, and it would mean the absolute world to me if I got to be a part of such a wonderful program!

The Joffrey Jazz and Contemporary Intensive was the best experience of my life. As a dancer focusing mainly on jazz and contemporary, I wanted to find an intensive that offered more than just ballet. The Joffrey Jazz and Contemporary Intensive was exactly what I was looking for. Dancing all day in NYC with people that share my love and passion for dance was a dream come true. Waking up each day as sore and tired as I was made me question if I could get through another day, but pushing through it with all the encouraging teachers made me grow immensely. My favorite part about the intensive was all that I learned about artistry and expression; not just how to do the steps. In addition to gaining strength and flexibility, I learned  how to perform and embrace my personality through dancing. During the program I grew so much as a dancer and a person. The Joffrey teachers are so dedicated, passionate and helpful. Everyone at the intensive improved tremendously, due to all the incredible teachers that pushed us to the next level. I would be honored to return for another very fun and invaluable summer at Joffrey.

When I stepped foot in LA this past summer, I told myself that it was going to be a great experience and I exceeded my own expectations. This was my second year with the Joffrey Ballet School and they really know how to stay the best dance school in the states. I attended the Joffrey West LA program hoping to just be dancing contemporary and jazz but I got more than I bargained for. Everyday I got to take ballet and every other day I took either partnering, mens class or both. Along with those classes I took hip hop, jazz, contemporary, Chinese, breaking and so much more. Not only was I challenged in each class, I learned from some of the biggest names in dance. Not only did I have fun, I also made connections with some of my idols in dance. I didn't think I would learn so much in such a short time. Thanks to Alice Alyse, I was able to work with Allison Holker and be apart of her piece that was put on at the end of the intensive. Joffrey knows how to make someone aim for the stars and achieve their dreams.

There are literally thousands of choices dancers have when looking for a summer intensive. I have attended the Joffrey Ballet School summer program for the last three summers, and plan to be there again next summer. I have had several friends ask me why I don't want to try another program. The answer is that I don't believe that there is a program out there that can compete with the Joffrey Summer Program! The faculty is exactly what you would expect. World renowned teachers in all disciplines provide the most well rounded dance program there is. Technical Ballet class, contemporary style, jazz, pilates, nutrition and health, and more. Every day is different and exciting! Living in a large city and being exposed to the arts and culture is a huge part of the experience. The comfort of knowing that I am in the heart of the City, yet taken care of in a safe environment is very important to me. I feel that Joffrey has given me a true picture of what a  student can expect if they chose to make a career out of their passion and love of dance. Thank you, JBS for the amazing experience!

Last year, I wrote my essay expressing how dance was my passion.  After the experience and training I received at the Joffrey Ballet School NYC this past summer, I can honestly say that I live and breathe dance – it is part of my soul and how I live my life daily. Not only did I grow as a dancer, but also as a person.  The experiences I gained during my summer at Joffrey were the most amazing experiences I could have asked for at the age of 13.  Attending the SI program confirmed my dreams of training and pursuing a career in dance.  I aspire to obtain a BFA or Master’s Degree in dance so that I can pass on the knowledge and love of the art of dance and hopefully inspire the next generation to keep the arts alive and dance, dance, dance – as I do! Attending another summer intensive at Joffrey Ballet School will allow me to further improve my technique and increase my experience by working with the most amazing faculty. Lastly, I love that I can now say, I am part of the “Joffrey family”.  I thank you for your consideration.    Sincerely,    Salma Tran

My passion for dance cannot be explained in words, but if I had to choose one it would be unbreakable. From the time I was two years old. I knew dancing was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I was always told that dancing was not meant for me, even from the owner of the dance studio I attend, but this won’t stop me from pursuing my dream. I want to prove to everyone that I am capable of doing what I desire and to give one hundred percent dedication into dance. Truthfully, I don’t know where I would be without dance. It let’s me express my feelings in a way words can’t and that’s what keeps me heading in the directions of my life in the dance studio and out. Joffrey Ballet School is the world premiere dance school in the USA because it changes people’s vision on dance. It lets dancers perfect their technique but at the same time let’s them express themselves through fluid movements to demonstrate the passion and dedication inside them. Being one of the only ballet schools that is well rounded in various dance curriculums intensifies my passion.

Dancing has always been a major part of my life and one of my greatest pleasures throughout my dancing career was to attend the Joffrey Ballet School Summer Intensive. Every day that I was there, I walked into the studio in amazement and awe of the opportunity I had to be there. I took in every movement, combination, and correction from the world class teachers.  I was able to be immersed in every type of dance: Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, Variations, Pointe, and Pas de Deux. Every class was individualized and I was pushed to dance like I never had before. The instructors gave attention to every dancer in the studio. I could feel myself growing as a dancer and an individual as the intensive continued. My goal was to come to Joffrey and improve my technique and not only did this happen, but I also found a new passion for dancing and expressing myself through movements.  The opportunity to be surrounded by such amazing people and in the heart of New York City was an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and I would be blessed to have the experience continue this summer.

The vision, community, and classes of the Joffrey Summer Intensive opened my eyes to the tremendous breadth of the dance world, while classes from successful dancers in New York gave me more appreciation for the art form. Dance has been present in my life for as long as I can remember, but the world-renowned teachers at the Jazz & Contemporary Intensive not only taught me how to improve my turns or to pick up choreography more easily, but helped me learn to work better with peers and put intentions behind my actions, in both dance and daily life. I took classes from over thirty of the most established dancers and choreographers in the country, all of whom had distinct styles of movement. The fact that I was able to witness the Sidra Bell Dance Company performing in Central Park made me realize how lucky I was to be under Ms. Bell’s direction for an entire two weeks. Another teacher, Andre Tyson, the assistant dean of dance at CalArts, told us that technique is a dancer’s ability to consistently apply certain skills to all styles of dance expression. At Joffrey, I both advanced that technique and furthered my artistic knowledge.

I know that at 12 I am very fortunate to have found something I am truly passionate about. Dance is not just an after school activity or something that keeps us busy. Dance is a lifestyle. People who are inactive call it an obsession, I call it a passion. Dance lets me express everything I'm feeling without saying a word. I can be me without being judged when I'm on the dance floor. No matter what mood I'm in I can dance and it makes me feel free. When I dance I feel like there is nothing else happening in the world. I eat, sleep and breathe dance. It would be a blessing  for me to get a scholarship to Joffrey  because I truly believe that Joffrey is an amazing an unique school and can make me the dancer I dream to be. Joffrey's program has such an amazing staff and  it would be an honor if I could train under them. My dream is to dance for the rest of my life and I believe Joffrey can help me do that with there premier program. I hope to train and work past my limit.

My summer at Joffrey Southwest was an amazing experience. Joffrey creates a very comfortable environment allowing students to open up, be challenged and grow as dancers. One of the greatest benefits of Joffrey is the ability to learn from world-class instructors and choregraphers such as Chris Coates, Mecca Andrews, and Alice Alyse. The instructors are dedicated to helping each student achieve personal growth through strong technique and creative choreography. Joffrey is a place where I met new friends with similar dance interests and values. They provided me the spirit of competition as well as support during class, rehearsals and performance.    The instructors taught us such strong technique and choreography that we were able to prepare and perform a professional full length production. I left my summer intensive inspired and excited to start a new year full of possibilities. Joffrey allowed me to see my full potential and taught me with hard work I can achieve my dreams. No matter where my dancing career takes me, the values and work ethic I learned from Joffrey will benefit me well into the future. Joffrey was the best summer experience that I have ever had and I cannot wait until next summer!

Last summer, I was lucky enough to live the dream of every single dancer across the country: I studied at the Joffrey Ballet School. Everyday, for three weeks, I gained the experience that would have taken years at any other institution. My time in New York was indescribable, and the instructors pushed me to accomplish the unimaginable. One class that I will never forget, was with an extremely talented and inspiring teacher, Guillermo Blinker. He called me out, and had me do the combination with him, just us two. The entire 45 seconds, I was holding my breathe. People always say that you can’t just be “talented” but that you have to have the “it factor”. I never understood what that really meant until Guillermo told me that I had it.     The Joffrey Ballet School is not just known for its extraordinary instructors, but also for the thousands of successful students that emerge from the institution. It is difficult to see a professional dance show, without reading “studied at Joffrey Ballet School” in a performer's biography.     I want to be a professional dancer…and when I do, I will be proud to put “studied at Joffrey Ballet School” in my bio.
