Summer Dance Intensives in the Western States: Joffrey’s Colorado Intensives

If you’re looking for the best summer dance intensives in the Western United States – ones that will further your growth as a dancer and performer – consider the Joffrey Ballet School’s intensives in Las Vegas and Colorado. These intensives offer unique opportunities to grow as a dancer through either classical and contemporary ballet, or to gain an introduction to the world of commercial dance or circus arts.

Here’s a brief overview of what to expect from Joffrey’s Summer Dance Intensives in the Western US.

Joffrey’s Colorado Classical and Contemporary Ballet Intensive

Joffrey’s Classical and Contemporary Ballet Intensives in Colorado Springs, Colorado are led by Artistic Director Colleen Barnes Merwin and are held from June 29 through July 17, 2020 on the campus of Colorado College. These intensives are appropriate for dancers from ages 8 through 20.

Classes will be held from 9 am to 5pm in the Cossitt Hall dance studios on the campus of Colorado College, with a final performance to be held in the Cossitt Hall Basement Studio. Each class lasts 1.5 hours, covering a classical and contemporary ballet, pointe, variations, improv and current contemporary technique.

Dancers requiring housing will live on the campus of Colorado College in Loomis Hall. Amenities in the dormitory include access to a kitchen, laundry area and student lounge. As with all of our intensives, the Colorado intensives are well chaperoned with numerous activities planned during the hours when dancers are not in class.

Unlike intensives in some of our other locations, airport pick up and drop off is not provided by the Joffrey at this intensive; parents can drop off their dancers between 12 and 4pm on Sunday before the start of their intensive, and assist them with packing and pickup by 12pm on Saturday following the intensive.

Our Colorado master faculty includes Colleen Barnes Merwin and Risa Mochizuki. Ms. Mochizuki hails from Tokyo, Japan; she trained at the Antwerp Royal Ballet and the Kishibe and Kawasaki Ballets in Japan and has been a medalist in multiple international ballet competitions.

Ms. Merwin danced with the Dayton Ballet, Ballet Pensacola and Dance Now! Miami and has been an instructor with the Joffrey since 2009. She is currently the Artistic Director of the Joffrey Colorado Springs, Kansas City and Joffrey South intensives as well as instructing part time at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. She is also working towards her MFA in dance and is an instructor at the University of Utah.
