If you live in Florida – or anywhere else in the United States or Canada – you don’t have to travel all the way to New York City to attend one of the nation’s top summer dance intensives! And you don’t have to choose between sunshine and your love of dance.
You can have the best of both worlds – the sun and the fun – by attending Joffrey Ballet School’s summer dance intensives in Tampa or Miami. Here’s what you need to know about these intensives and how they can take your dance education to the next level in two of the Sunshine State’s hottest cities.
Welcome to Miami, Bienvenido a Miami
This summer, Joffrey is offering two, two-week summer dance intensives in Miami with Artistic Director Jo Matos. Our Ballet Boot Camp intensive is held from July 6 through July 17, 2020 and our Fusion summer dance intensive is held from July 20 through July 31. Attend all four weeks and you’ll be studying the hottest dance styles in one of America’s hottest cities!
Miami Ballet Bootcamp
➡ July 6, 2020 – July 17, 2020
The Miami ballet intensives will focus on key aspects of ballet technique such as hip rotation, placement, articulation of the foot, the connections of head, arm, hand, body and foot, musicality and theatricality. Each day begins with body conditioning, then barre, center, pointe or variations, repertory and modern dance. Naturally, being in Miami we couldn’t overlook a Latin dance influence, so you’ll also receive Flamenco instruction.
Miami Dance Fusion
➡ July 20, 2020 – July 31, 2020
The Miami Fusion dance intensives will focus on many of the same core aspects of dance technique, movement and theatricality as our Ballet Boot Camp intensive, but will also include Jazz, Modern and Contemporary dance, hip-hop, Fusion-based choreography, Theater Dance, Improvisation and Latin Jazz.
The goal of the Miami Ballet and Fusion intensives is to fuse together multiple dance techniques to create what Artistic Director Jo Matos calls, “a truly American ballet company in the 21st century.”

Ms. Matos has been with the Joffrey since 2008, and is the Artistic Director of our Children’s Dance, Youth Ballet and Ballet Trainee programs in New York. Ms. Matos’ career spans three and a half decades and includes work as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and administrator at prestigious dance schools and institutions such as the Ballet Hispanico, Dance Now! Miami, the Hartford Ballet and many others.
Other instructors include Miami-based hip hop dance legend P.K., who has worked with some of the top names in pop, hip hop and latin music, as well as former Miami City Ballet soloist and principal Carlos Guerra and our Los Angeles Musical Theater director Gabriela Garcia, and many others.
The Miami summer dance intensives are for dancers between the ages of 8 and 25, with housing for dancers ages 12 and up available on the campus of Florida International University. Dancers will attend classes from 9 am to 5 pm each day, Monday through Friday, in the dance studios on the campus of Miami Arts Charter School – Wynwood campus.
