Tap Spectacular NYC

Come tap with us on the streets of the “Dance Capitol of the World” If your Broadway dreams include improving and refining your tap skills, “The Tap Spectacular” is the place to make those dreams come true. Tap a uniquely American art form honing both the musicality and movement skills of the dancer. Joffrey’s “Tap Spectacular” has been curated to connect the past to the present and reach into the future of where Tap is going.

Classes will include fundamentals and historic forms i.e. Soft-Shoe, Buck and Wing, Classical Tap, Class Acts, Jazz Tap, and Hoofing, into more contemporary techniques such as Rhythm Tap, Funk Tap and the most recent fusion of Tap and Hip Hop.

The Tap Spectacular summer dance intensive is held for one week only, from June 22 through June 26, 2020. School Artistic Director Jo Matos, who brings more than 35 years of dance instruction and choreography experience, 11 of those with the Joffrey is the Joffrey’s Tap Spectacular’s Artistic Director.

The Tap Spectacular Master Instructors include Christopher Broughton from “After Midnight”, currently performing with “Dorrance Dance”, “With each performance of “Dorrance Dance”, tap expands.”. THE NEW YORK TIMES

Kurt Csolak who toured with “Tap Dogs” and performed and choreographed for “World of Dance” and “Americas Got Talent”, Felipe Galganni a member of the “New American Tap Dance Orchestra” directed by Brenda Bufalino and Artistic Director of his own company “Felipe Galganni & Company”. In 2018 Felipe received the “Machado de Assis Medal” for disseminating the Brazilian culture in the USA for his unique blending of Tap and Bossa Nova.

Felipe is “Artist in Residence” with The American Tap Dance Foundation and Samara Seligsohn on faculty with Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center and also “Artist in Residence” with The American Tap Dance Foundation rounds out the main faculty for this Intensive.

Samara was the rehearsal director and a performer for “Tap it Out”, a site-specific tap event in Times Square as part of the Tap City NYC Tap Festival. And last but not least a surprise guest teacher is right around the corner stay tuned you won’t be disappointed.

This intensive offers a full week of tap instruction, from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Each class offers 1.5 hours of instruction with small class sizes and individual instruction and correction from our seasoned tap dance professionals. At the end of the week, students will perform for their parents in Joffrey’s “Tap Spectacular”, an in-studio performance. Classes will be held in one of 4 locations around the city, dancers should check their schedules at the beginning of the week to determine the exact locations. 

As with our other NYC based intensives, the “Tap Spectacular” is for dancers between the ages of 8 and 25, with housing offered for dancers over age 12 at the Pace University dorms and Joffrey’s own housing on East 3rd. Dancers in our “Tap Spectacular” intensive won’t just be learning in the classroom; they will also have the opportunity to grow and develop their dance and cultural awareness by attending a Broadway production, visiting New York’s museums and other cultural venues, and much more.

Like all of Joffrey’s summer dance intensives, the NYC Tap Spectacular requires dancers to audition in one of several locations around the United States and Europe. Each audition is a 90-minute master class with one of the Joffrey’s master instructors. Auditions will determine class placement, skill level, acceptance and scholarship opportunities for our intensives.
