For more than 60 years, the Joffrey Ballet School has offered summer dance intensives based in New York City. Since those early days we’ve worked hard to provide the best dance training to help develop the next generation of dancers. We’ve expanded beyond ballet into the latest forms of dance, including street, hip hop, jazz and contemporary, to help ensure that our dancers have the best possible training for commercial dance and that they are at the forefront of the dance world.
This summer, we’re offering a full program of summer dance intensives for dancers looking to learn the latest dance moves and improve their artistry and technique from some of the world’s leading experts.
Summer of Hip Hop NYC and TAMPA*
*Tampa is NEW this year
Kick off your summer right with a deep dive into the exciting world of hip hop dance with our Summer of Hip Hop NYC summer dance intensive! This one to three week intensive, offered from June 29 through July 17 in NYC and July 27 through August 7 in Tampa, is the ultimate opportunity to study with the best in hip hop dance, including and Deshawn Da Prince, Keenan Cooks, Casey (Tynee) Goshow, Jona Biddle, Trix and more, and Artistic Directors Lissette Salgado Lucas and David Lucas, co-founders of the Shake the Ground (STG) dance competitions.
Our Summer of Hip Hop dance intensive classes are taught by top hip hop dance professionals and master instructors from multiple disciplines to help bring you to the next level as a dancer and artist. Classes are held from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at the Joffrey Ballet School or one of several other locations (exact class locations are announced weekly).
Each class is 1.5 hours long, covering 75 different aspects of hip hop dance including break dancing, freestyle, house, jazz, funk and commercial, locking, popping, street dancing, battles and other forms. At the end of each session, dancers will perform in an in-studio performance for parents to demonstrate what they’ve learned. Students will take part in mock auditions held by the leading talent agencies Bloc and MSA. Here students will learn from the people who do the hiring how to make their resumes stand out and how to perform and act in an audition. They will hear what the agencies are looking for in an artist and what styles are the current trends.
The last week’s intensive is capped off with our 5th anniversary celebration, an end of summer showcase including a flash mob, music video and dance performance held at the Marymount Manhattan theater. To perform in the end of summer showcase, dancers must attend the last two weeks of the hip hop dance intensive.
The Summer of Hip Hop intensives are for dancers between 8 and 25 years old. For dancers over age 12 requiring housing, housing is provided in dormitories at Pace University or in Joffrey Ballet School’s residence on East Third Street.
The Summer of Hip Hop in Tampa housing is provided in dormitories at University of South Florida
